GOALS

The People's Fact-Checking Awards intends to highlight the work being done by ordinary citizens as well as journalists championing the fight against false information, either as a hobby or a profession. Credible fact-checks require a keen eye, so the tools and processes will be big considerations to determine the success of your submissions. Applicants that are able to innovate by using less conventional fact-check processes to reveal truth will have an advantage.

The People’s Fact-Checking Awards (PFCA), is offering $5000 in support for finalists and winners. The PFCA is designed to recognise the impactful fact-checking work being done in Africa in order to empower ordinary citizens to hold disseminators of harmful mis/dis-info accountable. Winners will therefore receive more than just cash grants. They will also receive the recognition and support that being identified as key players in the fact-checking space brings, including having their submitted work/fact-checks showcased on the PFCA website and other Pesacheck and Code for Africa media channels such as facebook, twitter and linkedIn.

THE BASICS:

Winners will receive cash grants of between $500 and $1,500, depending on the applied category and potential impact of the fact-check.

With help from a committee of experienced fact-checkers that will ensure each submitted debunk meets a set of industry standard fact-checking processes and criteria, an independent PFCA jury will evaluate all finalist submissions, and will award cash prizes in the following categories:

  • Best debunk from active citizen
  • Best debunk that has encouraged impactful/big changes
  • Best debunk that tackled government correction/clarification
  • Best debunk that tackled health-related misinfo/disinfo.
  • Best debunk that tackled online hate-speech/intolerance/militancy.

About Us

The People’s Fact-Checking Awards: Africa (PFCA) is a citizen-driven and focused on people working in fact-checking on the continent. The awards are funded through a seed grant from Meedan.

The awards are organised by PesaCheck, a pioneering verification initiative that is helping to kickstart fact-checking across East and West Africa. PesaCheck also helps watchdog media and NGOs establish their own standalone fact-check teams. The organization is an innovateAFRICA.fund grantee, and receives additional support from the International Budget Partnership, Code for Africa and the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ).
